X Abstract

The effect of long-range attractive van der Waals interactions on the nuclear magnetic shielding of a noble-gas atom in an anisotropic environment is discussed. In addition to the isotropic effect, there exists a term proportional to the anisotropy of the second shielding hyperpolarizability tensor and to the anisotropic part of the mean-square electric field. The developed formalism is applied to explain the medium-induced shieldings of 129Xe and 21Ne in the nematic liquid-crystal EBBA.

CiteULike organises scholarly (or academic) papers or literature and provides bibliographic (which means it makes bibliographies) for universities and higher education establishments. It helps undergraduates and postgraduates. People studying for PhDs or in postdoctoral (postdoc) positions. The service is similar in scope to EndNote or RefWorks or any other reference manager like BibTeX, but it is a social bookmarking service for scientists and humanities researchers.
